One of the interesting things to see in Hokitika is the Pioneers of the Frontier Statue situated in the Town Centre at the roundabout intersection of Weld Street and Tancred Street. You'll see he monument one block past the Hokitika Town Clock as you enter town. The monument was originally erected on Fitzherbert Street in 1914 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1864 Gold Rush to the West Coast of New Zealand. It is a figure of a simple pioneer (originally) pointing to the goldfields. In 2016, the monument was restored and relocated to its present location in the Town Centre. Overall, it is an interesting monument and link to the Gold Rush and early settlement of the Hokitika and other small communities around the West Coast.
